The Celts regarded the horse as the symbol of sovereignty, often appearing as a mare. The Goddess Epona, known as Rhiannon in Wales or Macha in Ireland, is often seen with a basket or key in her hand, symbolizing her as a form of mother goddess, nourisher and guardian.
